What makes a U-shape work in a room

U-sectionals were designed for the open great room — they break the space into a defined seating area without putting anyone’s back to the kitchen. Most U-shapes seat 6–8 comfortably. They need a minimum 14×16 footprint to breathe; cram one into a 12×14 and the room fights back.

Brands we see most in this shape

Pottery Barn Harper — the most common U we get. Deep-seat chenille, retails $4,500+ new. We see them in the $1,800-2,400 range used.

RH Cloud / Belgian Linen — the showpiece. Eight seats of down-cushion comfort. Rare and fast-moving when they come in.

Buying tips

Measure your room twice. A U-shape needs at least 14×16 to look right and let people pass behind it.
Check that all modules connect — proprietary clips can be missing on used modular pieces.
Down-filled cushions (RH, some Pottery Barn) need fluffing weekly to hold shape.
Coffee table size should be 1/2 to 2/3 the open span of the U — most people undersize this.

Common questions

How big does my room need to be for a U-sectional?

Minimum 14×16 feet for the room to breathe. 16×20 is ideal. Below 14×14 and the U will dominate the space awkwardly.

Are U-shapes harder to deliver than L-shapes?

Slightly — more pieces to maneuver, especially up stairs. We measure your stairwells and doorways before delivery so there are no surprises.

How many people fit on a typical U-sectional?

Six to eight comfortably. Some larger Pottery Barn and RH configurations seat ten.
